Team United

Team United has recently been awarded funding by West Lothian Council’s Let’s Get it Right for Autism fund. This means they are able to run 16 weeks of supported football sessions in partnership with Broxburn United Sports Club.

The programme is due to start at the end of August but they are holding an Open Day on 24th June which all families are invited to attend. It is particularly suitable for young people in P4 to S4 who have Asperger’s or high functioning autism.

The pathway programme has a number of components, all focussed on getting young people with ASD involved in sport, in this case football but also meeting their needs in a supportive environment.

The programme offers weekly training sessions, a monthly sports social club and an awards scheme. Sessions have trained coaches and autism support staff who also run the social club. They also hope to have competitions and games.

The aim of Team United is to help overcome some of the social barriers that exist for young people with autism participating and often re-engaging with sport.
